San Francisco’s rocking bass label Dirtybird is back with another progressive and fresh release quenching the imprint’s thirst for gritty new compositions. Joining the ranks of some of the industries more regarded talents like Claude von Stroke, Eats Everything, and Justin Martin, a new mystery moniker has listeners speculating on the validity that this is in fact a young talent and not a seasoned veteran in disguise. The UK’s Friend Within is another powerful import from the island known for it’s impressive group of cutting edge artists. A two track EP with impeccable quality and bumping house, The Game will hopefully not be the last bit of magic from this debut hidden talent.
Kicking off with a stuttering heavyweight cut on the title track, The Pull lures you in with soulful cut samples before a massive bassline drops in steaming up the energy. Not going over the top with the usual drum n bass inspired drops, this Dirtybird single is built for peak time house parties. Plenty of funky fills and thrills accompany this jackin’ ride into the abyss. You can expect plenty of attention grabbing breaks and fills, as The Pull becomes the main focus of the dancefloor. Cementing the destiny of this new artist with the Dirtybird crew, the last track on the release, The Hollow shows 90’s house flavors echoed by some truly crisp bass hits. Bouncy and fresh its deeper pads mediate the energy from more hard hitting bass music to classic and somber deep house.
Unclear who this knowledgeable name is, its apparent Friend Within is well versed both behind the decks and in the studio. Bringing a fresh spin on classic sounds, his early support is universal. With forthcoming releases on the likes of Hypercolour and Pets Recordings later this year we expect to hear much more from this talented hand. The Game is the first mark at a new sound destined to rock floors across the globe for seasons to come. Continuing the successful crusade of UK talent, Friend Within is yet another notch in the Queen’s belt.
