Dj Kicks

Across two decades, DJ-Kicks has cultivated mixes from DJs, producers and musicians who choose to push musical boundaries in exciting and innovative ways. Early and noted mixes from the likes of Carl Craig, Kruder & Dorfmeisterm and Nightmares on Wax helped create a platform for new talent to experiment and explore new territory.  Coined the most important DJ-mix series ever by Mixmag, DJ-Kicks continues to mix it up when it comes to musical styles, still offering a wider range of electronic music than most other DJ comps.

The next episode in the DJ-Kicks saga comes from UK’s Breach, a.k.a. Ben Westbeech. With success under both monikers, Breach continues to produce jackin’ deep bass house while Ben Westbeech sings on recent tracks such as Deetron’s Rhythm and Kraak & Smaak’s summer anthem The Future Is Yours. Breach’s track Jack has been heard on dance floors everywhere and peaked at number 9 in the UK charts.

Commenting on his upcoming DJ-Kicks mix, Breach mentions that it was scary. I’ve grown up with DJ Kicks. For me it’s a very important series and I didn’t want to throw it together at a time when I’ve never been as busy. It came at a pretty crazy point in my life, but I feel I’ve done myself justice with it.

Kicking things off with Innercity’s Prince Of The Immortal Woods, Breach sets distant boundaries with the tracks immense atmosphere and mood. After a quick fade out, Triangle Vision by Wire People pick up the pace and changes the vibe with its rolling percussion and bass.  Breaking the forward momentum is All Day by Beesmunt Soundsystem as it sets up the uplifting and astonishing It Is What It Is from Fred P.

Breach’s exclusive track for the mix Beroving actually stands for deprivation in Dutch.  Westbeech mentions since Jack’s blown up, I’ve been gigging so much, just on the road all the time. My life is missing sleep. I’m deprived of making music and being in the studio. I put this mix together and did the track in such a short space of time. I’m deprived of time at the moment so it seemed like a fitting word.

Transferring out his bustling track Beroving, Breach continues on with sounds one would expect to hear during his live set, including Cassio Kohl’s Broken, a remix from friends Dusky, set highlight Attention Seeker by Iron Galaxy, and a track from Detroit Swindle, Breach’s new neighbors in Amsterdam.

This is the music that I love, the kind of thing that I play when I DJ, said Breach. I made Jack and I play it, but there’s a lot more to the music I love than that. It’s been wonderful having a record that’s commercially successful. The thing is not to lose sight of why you started making music in the first place. I wasn’t trying to get in the Top Ten. I just care about making deep records that I get off on.
